Not Your Average Burger
I’m a burger girl for sure, but normally I keep my recipes pretty simple. So when my friend sent me this recipe for a burger with oats and spinach in it, I didn’t know what I’d think. (Plus I didn’t know if my kids would go for it.) The results were outstanding. With organic ingredients and grass fed beef, this burger could actually be called healthy. So try it- you might just like it!
Easy Entertaining
Meat
Ingredients
- 1 egg
- 1/2 cup old-fashioned rolled oats
- 1/3 cup yellow onion, diced
- 1/2 cup chopped spinach
- 1 lb grass-fed ground beef (or turkey)
- 2 tbsp shredded cheddar cheese
- kosher salt and freshly ground pepper
- 4 hamburger buns or kaiser rolls
- 2 tomatoes, sliced
- 1 avocado, pitted and sliced
- ketchup and mustard
Preparation
Preheat the grill for cooking over medium-high heat.
In a large mixing bowl, whisk the egg. Add the oats, onion, spinach, beef, cheese, 1 teaspoon of salt and ½ teaspoon of pepper and mix with your hands until just blended.
Form the meat into 4 equally sized patties.
Lightly grease the grill rack. Place the burgers on the grill and cook for about 5 minutes per side, or until your desired doneness. (Note: if using grass-fed beef, it cooks about 20% faster than regular beef, so check it after 4 minutes per side.)
Put the buns over low heat on the grill flat side down and warm for 2 minutes. Then build your burgers by topping with the sliced tomato, avocado, and ketchup and mustard.

I'm excited to try this recipe tonight! We are in the middle of a kitchen remodel so, all of our meals this past week have been a bit of a creative adventure ---cooking everything outdoors on the grille or in a crockpot. Looks like this will be an interesting recipe to try. Thanks!

question about this recipe -- could we make it as a meatloaf instead of individual burgers?
